A topographic map shows the shape of the land — its hills, valleys, slopes, and features — on a flat sheet. Reading one is a skill used by hikers, surveyors, geographers, engineers, agriculturalists, planners, soldiers, and anyone sitting a geography or fieldwork exam.
Read any topographic map: interpret scale and measure real distances, give and find grid references, read contour lines and recognise landforms from them, identify standard symbols, calculate gradient, take and follow a bearing, and plan a route.

Each module ends with a quiz, several of which ask you to work things out rather than recall them.
GPS fails. Batteries die, signal is lost in valleys and under canopy, and devices break. A map and compass need nothing.
A map shows context that a screen does not. The whole landscape at once — where the ground rises, where water collects, where the ridge runs — which is exactly what you need for planning rather than following.
Exams require it. Geography, surveying, agriculture, forestry, civil engineering, and military selection all test map reading, usually under time pressure.
A topographic map of anywhere — most national mapping agencies publish samples online — a ruler, a pencil, and ideally a compass with a rotating bezel. Practising on a real map is worth more than reading twice.
