A topographic map shows the third dimension — height — on a flat sheet, and once you can read it, the map stops being a diagram and becomes a description of a place: where the ground rises, where water collects, where a road had to be engineered around a slope, why a village sits exactly where it does.
This course teaches that skill completely. Scale and the large-scale/small-scale distinction that catches everyone in exams. Grid references, four-figure to eight-figure, with the “along the corridor, then up the stairs” rule that prevents the most common error in the topic. Contours — the four rules, the contour interval, the rule of Vs, gradient calculation, and cross-sections. Landform recognition, so a pattern of loops reads instantly as a spur, a saddle, or an escarpment. Symbols and landscape interpretation. Then navigation: taking and following a bearing, the three norths and magnetic variation, resection, route planning, and Naismith’s Rule.

It teaches interpretation, not just identification. Exams ask why the settlement is there, and the course shows what a good answer looks like — evidence from the map, with grid references, rather than a general description.
