What the role is for
Security staff exist to protect people, property, and premises, to deter and detect, and to respond appropriately when something happens. The presence of a professional, visible, competent officer prevents far more incidents than any intervention resolves.

The limits of your authority

A security officer is a private citizen with a uniform, not a police officer. You have essentially the powers of any member of the public, plus the authority the property owner delegates to you on their premises.
Professional standards
Punctual, correctly dressed, licence displayed where required. Sober, and not under the influence of anything. Courteous under provocation. Non-discriminatory. Honest in records. Confidential about what you see and learn.
Never accept a bribe, a favour, or free service in exchange for overlooking something. It ends licences and, in serious cases, results in prosecution.
Working with the police
Preserve the scene, do not move or handle evidence unnecessarily, note times and descriptions accurately, identify witnesses, and hand over clearly and factually. Your notes and your account are what the case may rest on.
