Urdu in 20 Days — A Bengali Speaker’s Route to Conversational Urdu

Twenty days to a foothold in spoken Urdu — not fluency, and this plan is honest about the difference.

This course is built on one advantage that most learners do not have: if you speak Bengali, the architecture of Urdu is already in your head. Word order is identical. Postpositions work the way যের / কে / থেকে already work for you. The three-tier honorific system maps straight across. The retroflex, aspirated, and nasal sounds that defeat other learners are already in your mouth, and centuries of shared Persian and Arabic vocabulary mean you passively know several hundred Urdu words before Day 1.

So the plan does not teach Urdu from zero. It harvests what you own, corrects the five sounds that give a Bengali speaker away, and then spends the remaining eighteen days turning that into speech you can use in a market, a rickshaw, a pharmacy, and a university office.

How each day is built

Every day has three layers. Core is twenty-five minutes and compulsory. Extend adds twenty minutes of listening and shadowing — the layer that closes the comprehension gap. Overflow adds fifteen minutes of Nastaliq reading, and dropping it entirely still delivers the conversational goal. On a heavy day, do the core alone and mark the day complete.

The four phases

Days 1–4 · Foundation — harvest cognates, fix the accent, build a working self-introduction, and learn numbers and negation.

Days 5–9 · Sentence frames — question words, postpositions, the present habitual, transactions, and directions. Twenty-five reusable frames by the end.

Days 10–14 · Moving through time — past, future, ability and desire, money, clock and calendar, then a consolidation day.

Days 15–20 · Register and rehearsal — politeness, conversational repair, religious register, university and administration, health and trouble, and a full ten-scenario rehearsal on the final day.

A short review quiz closes each phase, and the appendices give you an accent repair card, all 25 frames on one page, and an emergency card to keep on your phone.
